5 Accessible Activities for Seniors in Calgary

Byadmin April 5, 2023April 5, 2023

Now that Fall is here, let’s look forward to the fun and accessible activities for seniors to look forward to in the coming months. Here are some fantastic activities to pique the passions and interests of seniors in Calgary.

Political Forum on Senior’s Issues

This accessible seminar is an exciting opportunity for seniors to be heard on political issues affecting seniors in Calgary. Specifically, older adults get to be part of the intellectual conversations surrounding current political decisions about seniors that the government is considering.

This event will be held at the Confederation Park 55+ Activity Centre on October 4, 2019, from 1 pm to 4 pm. This is a free event and tickets can be obtained from eventbrite.

Doors Open YYC

This intriguing 2- day event is truly a highlight of September. It aims to give Calgary residents free access to historically important buildings and places in Calgary through facilitated tours and activities. Get ready to expose yourself to the secrets of Calgary’s most historic and influential sites. The highlights of this event will include architecture, culture, science, design, technological advances and much more. Not only do the locations have accessible activities for seniors, but it is also a great atmosphere for families of all ages to gather together to explore the city.

This is a free Calgary wide event from September 28, 2019, to September 29, 2019, from 1 pm to 4 pm. Visit Doors Open YYC to plan your adventurous trips to various historic locations in Calgary.

Lougheed House

This must-see heritage building is opening up its doors to the public with its latest exhibition, ‘Exploring Metis Identity Past And Present’. And, it goes until September 29, 2019. This exhibition introspectively investigates Metis history and culture. It also links the existence of the Lougheed House to Metis culture in Calgary which allows the public to get a complete tour of the heritage building. In addition, the magnificently tortuous architecture and design of the building reveals star-spangled surprises at every turn.

The Lougheed House is usually open Wednesdays to Fridays from 11 am to 4 pm and on weekends from 10 am to 4 pm. Seniors have a low admission rate of $6.50 per individual.

Esker Foundation

Esker is a privately financed contemporary gallery that is making waves in Calgary. Their mission is to provide accessible art, education and activities to the public. The fun programs are free for the public and the design of the space inspires both awe and serenity.

The fall exhibition, “Time Carriers” by Jeffrey Gibson, is about oneness and kinship. The opening reception will be on September 27, 2019, from 6 to 10 pm. The exhibition runs from September 28, 2019, to December 20, 2019. Additionally, there is no admission fee to attend the reception or visit the gallery during regular opening hours.

Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo is a relaxing and awe-inspiring environment to spend time engaging with educational tours, gardens and wildlife. The zoo offers relatively lower membership prices for seniors. In fact, the 3 membership plans available to seniors are: connect, engage and inspire. The connect membership costs $59.95 and allows seniors to visit the zoo throughout the year. Next, the engage membership costs $74.95 for a year. Other than 15% discounts for guest admissions, the engage membership offers 10% discounts for concessions, gift shops and Sunday brunches. The engage membership also offers a 50% discount for Zoolights. The inspire membership costs $129.95 for a year. The inspire membership offers a 20% guest admission discount, 10% discounts for concessions, gift shops and Sunday brunches and also free admission to Zoolights.
