Refresh Ideas so Seniors Can Revive Their Homes and Spirits

Byadmin March 26, 2023April 4, 2023

This post was written by Jason Lewis of strongwell.org

If you’re like many people, spending more time indoors due to the COVID-19 pandemic has you craving a new look for your home. A recent survey found home improvement spending is at an all-time high, with over 62 percent of homeowners willing to consider remortgaging their homes to make upgrades.

Looking at the same four walls might be bringing you down, but you can change all that. Here are a few ways you can revive your spirits by refreshing the look of your home.

Think Happy Thoughts

The atmosphere of your space can be a major player in how you feel; clutter, lighting, and colors, for instance, can make or break your good mood. Do some decluttering, removing piles of things you don’t use and items that are superfluous. Then add some natural elements to your home, like houseplants that clean the air or artwork with images from the great outdoors. Consider adding some aromatherapy, too, and then look into making a space for when you need a little me-time. With room for yoga, meditation, reading, journaling or crafting, you can engage in meaningful self-care on a routine basis.

Create a Flexible Space

If you can’t dedicate an area to self-care, don’t fret. Instead, convert one room to a flexible, multipurpose space. Make it an office or study hub by day with a folding table. Remove the table and change the room into a gym with foldable exercise equipment, such as a rowing machine, treadmill, or vertical climber. Turn it into a bedroom at night with a futon and a smaller bedside table — a handy addition when you accommodate guests. Plus, at any time it can be used as a playroom space for the kids or a quiet area for your personal respite.

If there isn’t an extra room available in your home, consider using your basement as a multipurpose space. If your basement needs remodeling, carefully consider which contractor you’re going to hire to complete the work. Determine your budget and keep in mind that even a lower-end basement renovation could run over $30,000.

Design an Accent Wall

Instead of repainting a whole room, consider designing an accent wall. Rather than having to pick a single color, check out the latest peel-and-stick wallpaper trend. Various durable and attractive designs are available, from elegant to natural or whimsical, and the convenient adhesive backing makes application a breeze. Don’t worry about making a mistake because new papers are easy to remove and reposition for the perfect look — something especially useful if you’re in a rented flat.

Redecorate Your Bedroom

It might not be the first room you think about, but updating your bedroom decor can really lift your spirits. Add a new trendy fabric headboard or buy a new bedside lamp with a colorful lampshade. Change the overhead lighting to a new fixture with dimmable bulbs to create a cozy look in the evening. If space allows, add a comfortable chair for reading or a padded bench for the end of the bed. Switch out your curtains and bedspreads to complete the room’s new look. If possible, add some artwork and decor that makes you feel comfortable and relaxed; your bedroom should be your sanctuary, so treat it as such.

Clean Up Your Kitchen

We spend a lot of time in our kitchens, whether it’s socializing with our families or just making meals. So, spend a little time giving this area some much-needed TLC. First, do a deep clean of the space; you’d be surprised how much food and grime can accumulate, especially in and around your oven/stove and refrigerator. Next, empty out your fridge and give it a complete wipedown, and give your oven a top-to-bottom clean — and don’t be afraid to pull it out and clean behind it. While you’re at it, clean your cabinet doors and hardware to help restore them to their previous shine. You’ll be surprised how much of a difference these tasks can make.

Cover a Couch

As House Beautiful notes, a slipcover is a great way to transform the look of your couch without the expense of new furniture. Today’s versions are made of a combination of polyester and spandex for a snug fit. Choose a multi-piece option if you have couch cushions you want to cover separately, creating a custom look. Select from a wide spectrum of colors to blend in with the room’s decor or go bold with a look that stands out.

You can also use a slipcover on your favorite recliner. Purchasing a new chair can be quite expensive — especially if you’re in the market for a very comfortable model — so try your best to extend the life of the one you have. If necessary, bring in a professional cleaner for both your couch and your chair. This can help bring them back to life.

Turn the Backyard Into an Oasis

With all the money you saved staying in for a year, now is a great time to turn your backyard into the oasis you’ve always dreamed about. Install a patio or deck and populate it with comfortable furniture, a water feature, and a firepit. Add a grill or splurge on an entire outdoor kitchen. Being outside in your new space can refresh your spirit whether you’re enjoying a family barbecue, making s’mores, or stargazing with a glass of wine.

Now that workers can come into your home, it is simpler to do those home improvement projects you’ve been thinking about. So, try one or more of these ideas to give your home the refreshed look you crave — and deserve!
